Alphaville is a German synth pop and new wave band that was very popular in the 1980s. Their most popular songs were “Big in Japan”, “Sound Like a Melody” and “Forever Young”, all contained on their debut album and “Forever Young” from 1984.
The story of Alphaville, whose initial name was Forever Young, begins in Münster, Germany, in the early 1980s. The band was formed in 1982 with three key members: Marian Gold (lead vocals), Bernhard Lloyd (keyboards and backing vocals) and Frank Mertens (keyboards and percussion). Inspired by the growing electronic music scene of the time, and artists such as Kraftwerk and David Bowie, the band ventured out to create their own sound. Alphaville contributed significantly to the evolution of electronic music. Their focus on synthesizers, layers of sound, and introspective lyrics influenced a generation of musicians who immersed themselves in electronic synthesis.
Although it reached the height of its popularity in the 1980s, the band has continued to create music and tour over the years. Marian Gold, the founding member and lead vocalist, remains a charismatic figure on the music scene, and Alphaville’s music continues to be appreciated by a wide audience around the world.
“This iconic German synth-pop band has left an indelible mark on the history of music with their distinctive style and their ability to create unique sonic atmospheres”.
